     Robert Eden Duncombe Shafto was born on 23 March 1776.2 He was the son of Robert Shafto and Anne Duncombe.1 He married Catherine Eden, daughter of Sir John Eden, 4th Bt. and Dorothea Johnson, on 25 October 1803.1,2 He died on 17 January 1848 at age 71.2
     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Durham City between 1804 and 1806.2
